How Does the Sri Lanka NIC Age Calculator Work?
Every Sri Lankan National Identity Card number encodes the holder's exact birth year and birth day of year. This online NIC age calculator uses that built-in formula to compute your age in years, months, and days based on the current calendar date.
Age Calculation Formula from NIC
Depending on whether your NIC is the old 9-digit format or new 12-digit format, the algorithm parses the values as follows:
- Birth Year: For old NICs, the first 2 digits represent the year of the 1900s (e.g.,
92= 1992). For new 12-digit NICs, the first 4 digits represent the full year (e.g.,1992or2004). - Day of Year (DOY): Digits 3–5 (old format) or digits 5–7 (new format) specify the sequential day of the year (001 = January 1, 365 = December 31). If the number is greater than 500, it indicates female gender and 500 is subtracted to reveal the real day code.
- Precise Difference: The calculated birthday is subtracted from today's date, adjusting for leap years, month length differences, and calendar shifts to provide down-to-the-day accuracy.
Why Use This Calculator?
When applying for passports, insurance policies, pension schemes, driving licenses, or bank accounts in Sri Lanka, official forms often require your exact age and birth date as registered in your National Identity Card. This tool verifies what DRP records indicate without guesswork.
