How Your NIC Number Hides Your Birthday
Every Sri Lankan National Identity Card number — whether it's the old 9-digit format issued before 2016 or the current 12-digit format — encodes your exact date of birth using a day-of-year code. Here's how the tool extracts your birthday from this code.
Extract the birth year. Old format: digits 1-2
give a 2-digit year (e.g. 85 = 1985). New format: digits 1-4 give the
full year (e.g. 1985).
Read the day-of-year code. The next 3 digits are a number from 1 to 866. For males, it's the actual day (1–366). For females, 500 is added (501–866). Subtract 500 for females to get the real day number.
Convert day number to a calendar date. Day 42 in 1985 → count 31 days of January + 11 days of February → 11 February 1985. Leap years (366 days) are handled automatically.
