How to Find Birthday from NIC Number
Extracting the date of birth manually requires understanding the structure of the NIC format. Here is how you can find the birthday from an NIC number:
- Extract the Birth Year: Take the first 2 digits (old NIC) or 4 digits (new NIC). For an old NIC like 92... the year is 1992. For a new NIC like 1992... the year is 1992.
- Extract the Day of the Year: Look at the next 3 digits (digits 3-5 for old, or 5-7 for new).
- Determine Gender & Adjust Days: If the 3-digit number is greater than 500, the person is female. Subtract 500 to get the actual day of the year. If it is less than 500, the person is male, and the number is the day of the year.
- Convert Day to Calendar Date: Count that many days from January 1st to find the exact month and day. Remember to account for leap years if the birth year is a leap year!
Understanding the Day-of-Year Encoding
The "Day of Year" method is an efficient way to pack both the birthday and gender into just three digits. A standard year has 365 days (366 in a leap year). The Sri Lankan government allocates the range 001 - 366 for males, and 501 - 866 for females. This ensures the date always maps back to a specific day in the Gregorian calendar.

Can I Find NIC Number from Birthday?
No. While you can easily extract a birthday from an NIC number, it is impossible to generate a complete NIC number just by knowing someone's birthday. This is because the final 4 or 5 digits of the NIC are a unique serial number assigned sequentially by the Department for Registration of Persons when the card is printed. Without that serial number, the exact NIC remains unknown.
