How Sri Lankan NIC Number Decoding Works

Read the birth year
The first four digits on a new-format card (or first two on an old one) encode the birth year. New: 1999 from 1999…. Old: 90 from 90….

Decode day-of-year and gender
The next three digits are the day of the year — 1 for 1 January, 365 for 31 December. If the number exceeds 366, subtract 500 to get the actual day, and that means the cardholder is female.

Serial number and check digit
What remains is a serial number assigned at registration. New-format cards (12 digits) end with a single check digit; old-format cards (9 digits + a letter) end with V or X.

In the old-format NIC (9 digits + letter), V means the cardholder is a registered voter, while X means they are not registered to vote. New-format 12-digit NICs replaced this letter with a numeric check digit.
Prepend “19” to the 2-digit year, keep the 3-digit day code unchanged, insert a zero before the 4-digit serial to make it 5 digits, then remove the V or X suffix. Example: 852140123V becomes 198521400123.
The 3-digit day-of-year value determines gender. Values between 1 and 366 indicate male. Values between 501 and 866 indicate female — subtract 500 to get the actual day of the year.
